In 1967, intrepid (and perhaps insane) city planner and entrepreneur Robert McCulloch paid the City of London $2.4 million for the bridge, which had been deemed unsafe for carrying modern traffic loads. The bridge was dismantled, brick-by-brick, each bring being numbered and packed so it could be re-assembled correctly in Arizona.
